International Billfish Tournament of Club NÁUtico de San Juan CELEBRATES 56TH EDITION AUG. 28- SEPT. 3, 2009

Anglers from far away destinations as Australia, South Africa, Ecuador, Guatemala, and more closer to home such as USA, Bermuda, Bahamas, USVI and Dominican Republic, among others, have confirmed their participation in this year’s International Billfish Tournament of Club Náutico de San Juan, 56th edition, to be held Aug. 28 – September 3, 2009.

"We are focused on sophisticated, deep sea fishing anglers who love a competitive environment," said Chairman Gonzalo M. Ferrer, who actively promotes Puerto Rico as a premier fishing destination.

"This year, our slogan will be ‘Fish for Life.’ As we all know, sports fishing gives us a unique fulfillment in our lives and, literally, many of us want to keep fishing for the rest of our lives," said Ferrer, who comes from a family who has being fishing for generations and who is part of a new breed of conservationist in Club Náutico de San Juan. This year, the Murray Brothers fighting chair always awarded to the Best Boat winner will carry Ralph Christiansen, Jr.' name as a tribute to his memory. The award will be known as the "Murray Brothers Ralph Christiansen, Jr. Perpetual Award."

The Chairman of the 56th edition also invited friends from the USVI to participate in the San Juan event. "As it’s our tradition we will have plenty of boats fishing the St. Thomas’ events this year, and we expect reciprocity."

The all-release tournament offers friendly ambiance, four fishing days, plenty of comfortable yachts of more than 50 feet, and great parties for both: anglers and companions in an a week-long event.

It is the longest consecutively held big game fishing tournament in the world.
